Crank failure

Text accompanying the pictures says they are circa 1996-97, the crank is 175mm, and notes the square taper is rotated 45° from typical. They were on a tandem reported to have been ridden about 3,000 miles.

The accompanying text also says ``Cranks were all tightened properly on the BB spindles, all except the cracked arm.''

This does not appear to be a simple overload failure because failure did not occur at the thinnest section. Topline cranks have a reputation for failing, but typically in the arms, which are quite slender.
